It turned out to be a beautiful day and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to spend time with your hounds. The exhibitors were quite pleasant, given the difficult circumstances with the Covid procedures we were required to follow. Mona Maloney provided transportation for me and was a delight. In forming my overall impression of the entry, I found encouragement in the quality of the adult hounds as they were presented on the day. There was substance, athleticism and generally good movement to be found among the mature entry. The initial observation, however, was that while these attributes were also prevalent in the puppy classes, there were more instances of straighter fronts and high tail carriage amongst the youngsters. It is a bit perplexing that well set under fronts and proper tail carriage are characteristics that are not being passed down through the genetics coming from previous generations. This is something to take into consideration as breeding programs move forward. Temperaments, with limited exceptions, were very good and I was delighted to see this. I found the quality and presentation of the entry to be well within the standard. The future of the breed seems to be in good hands. Best of Breed (25) GCHS Ch Khaleesi’s Drogon of the Seven Kingdoms-This 4 year old boy catches your eye immediately when he enters the ring. He has ample bone and muscle without any bulkiness and was presented in hard condition. He has a masculine head, kind almond eye, correct ear and planes of the skull. Broad, deep chest, proper spring of rib. He has a strong neck blending into a well laid scapula. Correct topline, strong loin, broad rear with correct croup and tail set. He moves so cleanly on the the down and back and covers ground with such ease on the side for a hound of such great size. His commanding appearance and symmetry earned him Best of Breed on the day. Best of Winners, Winners Dog, Best Movement (17) O’Kelleeghs Lismore Ogyrvran CGC Best of Opposite Sex (64) GCH CH Mendes Joan of Arc-This lovely dark brindle bitch displaying typical breed type came from the Veteran class. Balanced standing and on the move. There was no wasted action on her down and back, moving cleanly. She covered ground on the side gait. Correct topline with a strong loin, correct croup and tail set. Correct underline with tuck up. This girl showed no signs of aging on the day, earning her Best of Opposite Sex. Select Dog (27) Cnoccarne Benagh of Berrybriar- 4 year old male with great return of upper arm. Lovely sighthound shape, long masculine muzzle, soft far away look in his eye, rosed ear, correct topline, strong loin, correct croup and tail set. Carried tail high on the move. Covered ground with an easy and active stride. Select Bitch (72) Berrybriar Cnoccarne Promise of the Past-Lovely almost 6 year old girl. Had all the curves, strong head with no coarseness, good bite, presented in hard condition. Winners Bitch (44) XOXO Anette From Arya O’Marksbay CGC Award of Merit (29) GCH CH Glenn Eyrie’s Justified-3 year old masculine male. Presented in hard condition, moved nicely yet carried his tail high. Award of Merit (70) GCH CH Folklores Beltane Tate to Stormhaven-4 year old wheaten girl with soft curves throughout. Beautiful head and expression. Best Puppy (7) Mendes Winner Takes It All To Limerick Puppy Dogs 6-9 months 1 (5) Darom Kylirion Course of Action-This youngster had a lovely outline, correct topline, good amount of bone for his age and a correct underline. Carried tail high and in a curl. Planes of the skull were correct with good ear carriage. Nice eye, good strong neck flowing into a bit of a straight shoulder assembly. Would like to have seen a better return of upper arm as well as a better layback of scapulae. Moved a bit wide coming towards you, moved correctly in the rear going away and covered ground appropriately for his age on the side. He had a nice, harsh coat. Puppy Dogs 9-12 months 1 (7) Mendes Winner Takes It All To Limerick-Moved effortlessly around the ring with strength and balance. Moved cleanly coming and going with no wasted action. Good tail carriage, correct underline and topline. Excellent amount of bone for his age without being coarse. Well muscled and in great, hard condition. Good spring of rib. Scissor bite on the day. Good planes of the skull, correctly set rosed ear and strong neck. This promising youngster’s movement and condition won him reserve Winners Dog and Best Puppy on the day. 2 (9)-Gabriel’s Tanner Moore Of Raven Lily-Another quality male. His return of upper arm was a shade better than my first place boy. His croup was a bit steep and I would have preferred a little thinner ear leather on his correctly placed ear. Also a scissor bite on the day. Dogs 12-18 months 1 (11) Shancarrick’s Moloneys Lycan Beal-This boy had better overall balance with a more pleasing outline than my second place boy. Good bone, excellent depth of chest. Good neck flowing into an adequately angled shoulder assembly. 2 (13)-Yggdrasil O’Marksbay-Carried tail high on the move. Topline not as strong as my first place boy. Novice Dogs 1 (15) Gra Fior Duncarrick Predestination-Carried his tail properly on the move yet his topline fell off too soon. Could have used a shade more bone. Lifted his front pasterns high on the move. Excellent ears nicely set on a correct head. Nice expression Harsh coat. Open Dogs 1 (17) O’Kelleghs Lismore Ogyrvran CGC-Curvy, properly balanced wheaten male. Good bone and presented in excellent hard muscle and condition. Front shoulder angulation matched the rear assembly angulation. Movement was equally balanced with ground covering, effortless reach and drive without being overdone. Moved cleanly on the down and back. Strong neck blended into a properly laid shoulder assembly. Masculine head with very little stop, properly set rosed ear with thin leather, good bite and dark eye. Correct topline, curves, rise over the loin, correctly angled croup and tail set. Tail does rise up a bit on the move but does not curl or go above the level of the back. Correct underline with proper tuck up. His overall balance, strength, confidence and movement won him Best of Winners and the gait class on the day. 2 (19) Franjo Ailne Quote The Raven Nevermore CGC TKN- Another quality male. Doesn’t move quite as cleanly coming towards you as he should. Side movement is balanced with good reach and drive. Good topline with proper tail carriage on the move. Would have liked a bit more width in the chest. Good bone, expression, bite and temperament. Puppy Bitches 6-9 months 1 (6) Cnoccarne Dioghaisagh Berrybriar-I absolutely loved everything about this bitch. She had a lovely sighthound outline, moved beautifully and covered ground with power for one so young. Her expression was soft, dark eye, plenty of bone, strong head with no coarseness. Well muscled presented in hard condition. Was pleased to award this youngster Reserve winners bitch on the day. Looking forward to watching her mature. Puppy Bitches 9-12 months 1 (8) Horizons Fidgeting Limerick-This girl had the best balance overall in the class with good length of leg. Lovely feminine head with a strong, wide lower jaw. Correct planes, good expression, excellent ear and eye. Nicely muscled and in good condition. Topline, croup and underline correct. Movement was easy and effortless. 2 (14) Horizons Ticket to Ride To Folkloire- This girl stood out in the class because of her length of leg. While she had a lot of good things going for her, I would have liked her to have been a tad longer in the rib cage. Ear set correctly but would have liked it a little smaller and tighter, lovely expression, good eye. Flowing curves. Balanced angles front and rear. Moved along with confidence and ease. 3 (18) Mendes I have A Dream Of Limerick At Zajacz-Would have liked a better return of upper arm and a shade more length of leg underneath. Excellent width and length of second thigh. Moved along easily, correct set of croup and tail set, but carried tail a little high on the move. Beautiful feminine head, rosed ear and good expression. 4 (16) Mendes Dancing Queen Of Limerick-Similar to my third place girl. Would have liked a little better return of upper arm. Easy mover with correct tail carriage. Bitches 12-18 months 1 (20) Glenn Eyrie Summer Solstice-Excellent shoulder assembly with a matching balanced rear end assembly. Her movement was balanced with proper reach and drive, but was spoiled by the roll her overweight condition caused. Correct tail carriage. Feminine head, good bite, nice expression, harsh coat. 2 (22) Folkoire’s Grace O’Malley-Beautiful headpiece, strong without being masculine. One of the harshest coats on the day. Carried her tail high on the move. Movement not as clean coming towards you as it was when going away. Overall muscle condition was hard. Novice Bitches 1 (26) Cnoccarne Cann Na Beathagh-Very well balanced with a good return of upper arm. Long, strong second thigh. Ear well placed. Well muscled throughout, presented in hard condition. Moved with ease and strength and was clean coming and going. 2 (24) Prairie Creek Slone Aine Naoaks-Correct well muscled shape in hard condition with excellent substance. Not clean coming or going, carried her tail high and had a flat ear. Well balanced with a harsh coat. Good top and underline. Strong neck blending into a well laid scapula. Head was pleasing and balanced. Amateur-Owner-Handler Bitches 1 (30) Lochbay Yield To Temptation-Does not move cleanly on the down and back. Left front pastern twists outward on the move. Strong feminine head with correct ear set and nice expression. She was balanced front and rear. Would have liked a tad more fore chest. Bred by Exhibitor Bitches 1 (34) Enchantress Of Franjo-Curvy outline, well muscled. Nicely balanced. Rise over a strong loin. Feminine, strong head with proper planes. Ear set correct but the ear could have been a tad smaller. Clean and true on the down and back. No wasted effort on the move. Lovely fore chest with correct width. Great harsh coat. 2 (32) Salish Shadowcat-She was not having any part of this show today. She had a little more substance than my first place bitch, nice outline with a correctly arched, long and strong neck. Good bone, feminine head with lovely expression and correct ear. I felt as if her hygroma may have been giving her issues on the day. American Bred Bitches 1 (40) Salish Legacy Siren-loved the scope, strength and overall shape of this bitch. Her strong neck blended in beautifully to her shoulder assembly. Stong head with no coarseness, good ear set properly, long muzzle, good planes of the skull. Extremely strong rear, moved along with purpose, covering ground with no effort. 2 (38) August Ice Crystal-Another bitch of high quality. Her shape was that of a sighthound and her movement was easy and balanced. She was clean on the down and back with no wasted movement. Beautiful, strong feminine head, good bite, planes of the skull were correct, strong muzzle, lovely expression. Proper tail carriage. I would like to have seen a bit better return of upper arm. Presented in well muscled and hard condition. 3 (36) Donndubhan’s Raghallaigh Of Franjo ATT- Moved along effortlessly and was clean on the down and back. Needed more length of leg. Was balanced, good coat, lovely expression. Was a tad overweight and carried her tail high on the move. Open Bitches This class was filled with so much quality, unfortunately I was not able to award them all and some left the class without receiving a placement on the day. 1 (44) XOXO Anette From Arya O’Marksbay CGC TKI-Superb red wheaten bitch, there was no doubt she could catch a wolf. Presented in hard, well muscled condition. She had a lovely return of upper arm and was so well balanced. Moved beautifully with balanced reach and drive. Feminine head, lovely soft expression, good bite, rosed ear set properly, correct topline and underline. Her overall balance, movement and maturity won her Winners Bitch on the day. 2 (48) Lansdowne Road Bronte-Another outstanding quality bitch. Pushed the first place for this class but #1 had the better return of upper arm. 3 (54) Taliesin’s August Beaujolais- And yet another bitch of superb quality. I had to split hairs in this class. She was also balanced, moved well and presented in excellent condition with a nice broad rear assembly. To be critical I would have liked a darker eye to match the coat and a tad better return of upper arm. 4 (56) Khaleesi’s Viserion Of The Seven Kingdoms-Lovely bitch presented in good condition. Moved nicely from the side and cleanly coming towards you but a bit wide in the rear. Great scope. Judge - Jacqueline Carswell
For the past 40 years I have shared my life with Irish Wolfhounds, as companions and as a breeder of Champion hounds who have won several top honors at our National and Regional Specialties. It has been my privilege to meet and learn from our breed’s most knowledgeable and talented people in the U.S., Canada and abroad. I was fortunate in my formative years to have been mentored by Bill and Betty Deemer “Fitzarran”. The dam of my first litter was Ch. Fitzarran Jade, Breed winner of the IWCA National Specialty in 1991. Carnasserie has incorporated the bloodlines from a limited number of other top producing kennels into my breeding program as well, still maintaining championship lines from my foundation bitch. Of the 10 Irish Wolfhounds currently living with me, four are 8th generation, one is 9th generation, two are 10th generation, and two are 11th generation grandchildren of Jade. Some of my past judging assignments have included the Sweepstakes classes for the Irish Wolfhound Association of the West Coast, the Potomac Valley Irish Wolfhound Club, the Irish Wolfhound Club of the Puget Sound, The Irish Wolfhound Club of America, the Irish Wolfhound Club of Canada, the Irish Wolfhound Association of New England, The BC branch of the Irish Wolfhound Club of Canada, all classes for the first Specialty Match for the Irish Wolfhound Association of the Greater Smoky Mountains, and the Irish Wolfhound Association of the Garden State Specialty match. I have also judged the following clubs specialties; mid Canadian Regional Irish Wolfhound club, the Irish Wolfhound Association of the Garden State, the Northern California Irish Wolfhound club, the 14th Irish Wolfhound Club of Russia’s National Specialty, the Irish Wolfhound Club of America’s National Specialty, Rocky Mountain Irish Wolfhound Association, the Irish Wolfhound Club of Northern Ireland, Irish Wolfhound Association of New England, IWADV supported entry at the Bryn Mawr KC and the Irish Wolfhound Association of the West Coast. I served 7 years on the board of the Berger Picard Club of America as its treasurer and currently hold the position of its AKC delegate, having been so for the past 4 years. |

Also thanks to Mona & Pat Maloney for transporting me during my stay. I enjoyed my delicious lunch and outgoing, friendly reception by club members and my ring steward. There are 3 traits that are universal to all sighthounds – a deep chest, leg length longer than chest depth, and the tuck up (i.e., negative space that allows the hound to flex at the gallop). Without these 3 traits you will not have an IW that is the largest and tallest of the galloping hounds – you will only have a big dog. 6-9 Month Dog #5 (First): “Darom Kylirion Course Of Action” Nice puppy with great head and bone; good depth of chest. He started with a little stage fright but quickly got over that and moved quite well with handler. More leg will increase his stride. Correct bite, ears, dark eyes and a loving temperament. 9-12 Month Dog #9 (First, & Best Junior Sweepstakes): “Gabriel’s Tanner Moore Of Raven Lily” Tall, leggy, rangy, well grown young hound. Stands over a lot of ground. Long wide croup. His width carried down thru his hind legs. Moving long and connected back to front. Correct bite, big teeth, rose ears, black pigmentation, happy attitude. Needs the rest of his puppy coat removed, especially on his good, strong head. #7 (Second): “Mendes Winner Takes It All To Limerick” This dog has correct bite and ears; good coat; in excellent condition. He is on the compact side with short, flat croup. Tail went up during movement. More leg would let him cover more ground. Gentle attitude of a good friend. 12-18 Month Dog #11 (First, & Best Senior Sweepstakes): “Shancarrick’s Moloney’s Lycan Beal” Handsome young hound. The curves flow all thru him. Good on the move and quite true down and back. Good bite, big teeth, rose ears, and dark eyes. Long croup and correct tail carriage. Time tells the story; I hope he continues on up in leg length and does the breed some good. #13 (Second): “Yggdrasil O’Marksbay” Long bodied with a short croup. He needs a lot more leg to get him in proportion. Still he was doing his best in the ring. Kind face, good bite, can rose his ears when he wants to; he is a devoted loving hound. 6-9 Month Bitches #6 (First): “Cnoccarne Dioghaisagh Berrybriar” This leggy, shapely, happy puppy is what I call a stick dog right now. I’ve had plenty of them. She will only get better. Good on the move and covering ground, she was a joy to see. 9-12 Month Bitches #14 (First & Best Opposite Junior Sweepstakes): “Horizons Ticket To Ride To Folkloire” Old, haunting, and beautiful. Old as in original type. Haunting because she takes you so far back. Leg, shape, proportion, coat and movement were all there. Correct bite, big teeth, dark eyes, and a sense of humor. She can still trot on 3 legs while scratching her neck….I loved her. #8 (Second): “Horizons Fidgeting Limerick” This puppy is made from from the same mold as her sister #14. She is also a high-quality puppy. Two of a kind so good to see. #18 (Third): “Mendes I Have A Dream Of Limerick At Zajacz” This puppy had many good traits; movement, head, but not correct proportion. She needs more leg. #10 (Fourth): “Mendes Honey Honey Of Limerick At Moloneys” Also with this bitch (as with #18) needs more leg. 12-15 Month Bitches #22 (First & Best Opposite in Senior Sweepstakes): “Folklore’s Grace O’Malley” Overall high quality with the essentials – leg, shape, and tuck up. Good movement, coat, bite, big teeth, rose ears. A delight to the eye for anyone who wants to see the IW remain a sighthound. #20 (Second): “Glenn Eyrie Summer Solstice” Good head, ears, decent mover. Looking for more leg and shape. Easy, gentle, and kind attitude. 18-21 Month Bitches #48 (First); #28 (Second); and #52 (Third): I am truly sorry that my notes for this class were left behind in the overhead storage bin on my flight home. I have owned and bred Irish Wolfhounds since 1976. My horses and hounds have always been the main focus for me each day. Participation in dog shows is compulsory if you are going to breed IWs. Dog shows are also a good place to get different views and perspectives. I've always enjoyed showing and over the years my St Leger hounds have done well. Interest in dog shows can take you all over the world, and the people you meet can end up life long friends. I look forward to meeting you and your young hounds. |
